Low Cost Oracle Upgrade: The WireCache DA 3000 Performance Accelerator Appliance
The WireCache Oracle database accelerator is a modular appliance that boosts overall system performance by 2-10 times without having to change a single line of application code. Now you can upgrade your Oracle system performance without increasing your Oracle license and support costs.
The WireCache DA 3000 Transparent Accelerator Appliance is made up of one Transaction Processor (TP), and between one and four Storage Engines (SE), all interconnected by an internal Gigabit Ethernet fabric. Each component is powered by quad Opteron CPUs, and occupies 2U of rack space. The number of Storage Engines is dictated by the workload on the appliance: the amount of data to be cached, and the volume of queries that it must support. In a fault-tolerant environment, there is also a spare unit that can take over from a failed TP or SE, and the internal network is duplicated.
Logically, the DA 3000 sits between the applications and the Oracle database. This is typically achieved by switching IP addresses so that the DA 3000 has the address formerly owned by the database. Applications will automatically reconnect when they detect the dropped connection. When they do so, they will be addressing the DA 3000, though this will be completely transparent to the applications.
In operation, the Transaction Processor scans incoming SQL to determine whether the query can be answered from its cache. If so, it hands the query off to a Storage Engine for high-speed processing. All other SQL passes through unchanged to the RDBMS for normal processing.
As part of the installation, the WireCache Appliance instruments the target Oracle database, so that it can track data changes that impact the cache. Using this instrumentation, it maintains itself in exact synchrony with the database. Any query result returned by the DA 3000 will be identical to the result that would have been obtained from the enterprise database.
Once in operation, the DA 3000 is invisible to applications. The only sign of its presence is that applications accessing the Oracle database run much faster, and at the same time the RDBMS CPU load drops by half or more.
